Later that afternoon, Hugo sat at the kitchen table watching as storm clouds heaved into view over the ocean, causing the sky to bruise a blue black. Elodie sat beside him, scratching a picture of Georges the bear on a piece of paper, ready to give to Kasia when she returned. She had been gone more than she had been present ever since he had told her about Giselle and Nanette, and he wondered whether his revelation had disgusted her in some way.
He had wanted to talk about it with her, but it was as though he had swallowed all the words concerning his past once more, and they went back into their hiding place, deep in his stomach.
Each week, she informed him that she would be away with Maurice under the guise of being his nurse.
âIt is safer for everyone,â she had said. âAfter the police coming and you being friendly with the major, it is best that I keep on the move.â
At first, he felt a little relief that she was gone, that perhaps it was safer for Elodie if she wasnât around, but soon he found that he missed her, which made him irritable and grumpy. The evening meal was not the same without her and her quips about his food â the gentle sparring between them becoming friendly almost, silly, making them both laugh. Elodie was different too and looked out of the windows more often than normal as if by doing so, she would manifest Kasia coming down the driveway, waving and smiling at her.
When she returned, everything felt a little lighter. She would regale Hugo with titbits of her journey as much as she could, giving him news of the German troops, the morale of the people in the towns and rumours of when the Allies might get to France. He marvelled at her but never praised her even though he could see that she was eager to hear him say how brave she was, how bright, how clever. Again, he wanted to say those things to her, but once more the words disappeared as soon as he thought of them.
âWhat am I going to do about the major?â Hugo asked Elodie.
She cocked her head to the side as if considering his question, and he was sure that she had started to understand almost everything he said yet would still not reply.
âHe wants to see Kasia and Maurice. I think he has a sore backside!â He patted his behind to let her know what the new word meant and was gratified to see that she gave him a big grin.
âIt isnât safe, though, is it?â he asked her.
She shrugged and went back to her drawing of the bear.
